Dr. Stephan Barth, ForWind - Center for Wind Energy Research, Germany

Stephan Barth has been working in the wind energy sector for more than 10 years. He is currently the managing director of ForWind - Center for Wind Energy Research of the Universities of Oldenburg, Hannover and Bremen. He studied physics and holds a PhD in natural sciences from the University of Oldenburg. Prior to his position at ForWind Stephan Barth has been working as a scientist and project manager at the Energy research Center of the Netherlands (ECN). Stephan Barth is the Alternate German Member of the Federal Republic of Germany within the Executive Committee of the International Energy Agency Technology Collaboration Programme Wind Energy Systems (IEA TCP Wind) and is also vice-chair of that body. Stephan Barth has been a long-term member of the Board of Directors of the European Wind Energy Association and is member of several other regional, national or international committees and bodies, e.g. Board of Trustees of Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy Systems Technology.


 

Prof. Ping JU,  Hohai University, China

JU Ping received BEng. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Southeast University, China in 1982 and 1985, respectively. In 1988 he received a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. From 1994 to 1995, he was an Alexander-von-Humboldt Fellow at the University of Dortmund, Germany. He is now a professor of electrical engineering and vice president of Hohai University, Nanjing, China. He is a senior member of IEEE. His research interests include modeling and control of power systems, and smart grids with renewable power generation.

 

 

 

 

Mr. Jason M. MacDowell,  Industry and Policy of GE Energy Connections, USA

Jason MacDowell is the Director of Industry and Policy for GE’s Energy Consulting business. He is responsible for leading the growth and modernization of the global energy industry by making advancements in clean energy technology, technical regulatory policy, grid codes and technical standards, industry practice and country-level energy infrastructure planning. He leads a global team focused on power system analysis, thermal and renewable generation integration analysis, compliance testing and assessment, custom hardware solutions for generator protection and controls and power system consulting. He brings 18 years of energy industry experience on power systems engineering analysis and operation, interconnecting thermal and renewable generation into the bulk power system, wind turbine and renewable plant electrical design, load flow and stability modeling, power plant performance testing, sub-synchronous resonance and generator protection and has led multiple programs and studies on these subjects.

 

 

 

 

Prof. Hongbin SUN, Tsinghua University, China

Hongbin Sun received his double B.S. degrees from Tsinghua University in 1992, and a Ph.D from Dept. of E.E., Tsinghua University in 1996. From 2007 to 2008, he was a visiting professor with the School of EECS at the Washington State University in Pullman. He is now ChangJiang Scholar Chair professor in the Department of E.E. and director of energy management and control research center at Tsinghua University. He is currently an IEEE senior member and IET Fellow. He also serves as the editor of the IEEE TSG, associate editor of IET RPG, and member of the Editorial Board of four international journals and several Chinese journals. He has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers, of which over 60 are IEEE and IET journal papers, and 4 books. He has been authorized 5 US Patents of Invention and more than 100 Chinese Patents of Invention.

 

 


 

Prof. Yuanzhang SUN, Wuhan University, China

He got his Ph.D. degree from Tsinghua University in June, 1988. Before joined in Wuhan University in 2010, he was a full professor with Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University. He severed as Associate Director (2006-2010) of State Key Laboratory of Power System Control and Dynamic, Tsinghua University, and Dean (2010-2013) of School of Electrical Engineering, Wuhan University. He was a Specially Appointed Professor of “Chang Jiang Scholars Program” (2000-2005) organized by Chinese Ministry of Education. He was supported by NNSF of China for Distinguished Young Scholar in 1999 and Oversea Cooperation Funds for Young Scholar in 2000. He was the Chief Scientist of two major programs supported by NNSF, with total funds more than 3 million dollars. He was Expert Member and Assistant Chief Scientist of Major State Basic Research Development Program (973) “Basic Research on Improving Reliability of Large Interconnected Power System”. He was the PI of the world’s first wide-area damping control project which is practically on operation in Guizhou power grid of China. He is an internationally recognized expert who advocates using heavily energy-computation industrial loads to accommodate wind power. He received National Natural Science Awards of China in 2008. Prof. Sun has published over 150 peer-reviewed academic papers and eight monographs in Chinese or English.


 

 


Prof. Peter Tavner, Durham University, UK

Peter Tavner, DSc, PhD, MA, Eur Ing, CEng, FIET is an Emeritus Professor of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, Durham University, UK. He received an MA in Mechanical Sciences from Cambridge University in 1971, a PhD from Southampton University in 1978 and a DSc from Durham University in 2012. He has held a number of senior research and technical positions in the electrical supply and manufacturing industries.He was Professor of New & Renewable Energy at Durham University for 8 years, establishing New & Renewable Energy MSc and MEng courses and placing the university as a leading UK centre in off-shore wind energy. He was elected President of the European Academy of Wind Energy from 2010-2012 and is author of three IET books:
  • Condition Monitoring of Rotating Electrical Machines;
  • Off-shore Wind Turbines, and Reliability, Availability & Maintenance
  • Wave & Tidal Devices, Reliability & Availability
He was joint winner of the Institution Premium of the IEE in 1988
